Jacob is the patriarch whom God later named Israel. It's through Jacob that “Israel” enters the Bible story. Jacob’s life embodies the story of Israel that reaches its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. As Jacob became Israel, so Jesus became Israel in person to fulfill Israel’s mission.
