When Everything's On Fire: The House of Love

In 1425 Andrei Rublev, a Russian monk and iconographer, created what would become one of the most famous icons in history: The Hospitality of Abraham, more commonly known as The Trinity. On one level it’s a depiction of the three angels who dined with Abraham at the oaks of Mamre. But on a deeper level it is an iconic representation of the Holy Trinity. Rublev painted the icon during a time of political turmoil in Russia; he wanted meditation on the icon to help his fellow monks keep their souls at peace by fixing their hearts on God. In the icon the Trinity is seated at a four-sided table with the side nearest the viewer left vacant. It’s an invitation for the viewer to join the Trinity in their House of Love.
