The Tears of Jesus

The raising of Lazarus is the seventh and greatest sign in John’s Gospel. It points to Jesus’ resurrection, our resurrection, and the restoration of all things. In the raising of Lazarus, every Lazarus—every hopeless case—finds hope. But if this is so, why did Jesus weep? What purpose was there in the tears of Jesus? In the agonizing space of time between death and resurrection, Jesus weeps with us.
